Story Coach
For more than a decade, I’ve been teaching story development and screenwriting while working with individual clients as a story consultant and coach for both screenplays and fiction.
The Dove no. 2, group IX by Hilma af Klint (1914)
I have repeatedly found there is no one-size-fits-all approach, for a writer or for a story. Some writers have a natural understanding of structure (though, to be honest, that’s rare) while others have a nonstop flow of ideas. Some generate unique, compelling premises but lack the discipline and/or toolset to fully realize them; others have steady output but aren’t able to delve into the unconscious to draw on their wilder, deeper sources of inspiration. And all of us, at all stages, wrestle with doubts, limitations, and blindspots.
We add an extra burden when we think we have to tackle these issues on our own. The solitary writer who produces the masterpiece on her own, with no outside input or support, is a myth. We may all land differently on the introvert/extrovert continuum but feedback is integral for everyone.
Whether we feel stuck or scared or paralyzed or confused, the obstacle almost always promises to steer us toward a new doorway, if we know how to ask it. That’s where I can help.
My approach is holistic, intuitive, and malleable, depending on the needs of the individual or the project.
I bring:
An in-depth understanding of story structure with a robust toolbox
Feedback that is emotionally nuanced and big-picture
“Diagnostic” tests to help you discover what’s working and not working within your story
A compassionate sounding board and brainstorming partner
Somatic tools and practices to help you work with anxiety and doubt
Meditation and mindfulness techniques to help you access your deeper intuition and to tap into more unrestrained creativity
In addition, I can help you establish a daily or weekly routine and accountability structure that works for you. The best version, I’ve found, is not motivated by shame or desperation, but a system which can increase your productivity in a measurable, sustainable way and which factors in the need for open space and downtime.
Questions? Curious? I’d love to hear from you and to discuss how I can help you get “unstuck” or to create a plan to get you to the finish line. Contact me for rates and availability.
TESTIMONIALS
“There is almost no one I trust more with the plots of my novels than the screenwriter and director Laura Davis. A brilliant reader, writer, and thinker, Davis has an intuitive, unerring grasp of story, and an encyclopedic range of filmic and literary references at her disposal. She will bring your work to the next level.” — Karan Mahajan, novelist
“Laura is a story wizard, full stop. She's guided me through every stage of screenwriting, from the vulnerable baby idea stage, to the first draft outline, to the 16th what-the-hell-is-happening-draft stage, and is gifted at it all. Not only does Laura intuitively understand structure, theme, and meaning, but she's able to push your work (in a gentle, supportive way!) to the next level, meaning — she's somehow able (see: wizard) to get to the heart of your story, understand your particular voice as an artist, and encourages you to do the hard work to get there, because it's always worth it. I can honestly say there's no one I'd rather go to for story help, ever. In fact, I already regret writing this because now you'll know my secret!!!” — Carlyn Hudson, writer/director
