Inner Critic Q&A

What is an inner critic?

If you’re asking this question, Congratulations! This workshop may not be for you.

More seriously, the inner critic is the voice in our heads that offers critiques, doubts, and fears but never solutions. It loves to assert authority and often wrongly assumes it possesses a knowledge of the future. This voice (an adaptive strategy, as we’ll learn) can paralyze a project not yet formed or thwart progress on one underway with its “helpful feedback.” It can show up in the form of a simple question like “What if this is stupid?” or “What if this is no good?” especially if it’s something we really want to undertake.

Who is this for?

This workshop is for anyone who has every been hindered and/or harmed by an internal critical monologue.

It’s for writers and other artists and for anyone attempting to initiate and realize a challenging goal and who is stumbling up against any inner blocks.

Why am I teaching this?

The real answer is longer and more complex but here’s the simplest version:

  1. I’ve taught, consulted, and coached for well over a decade. I’ve repeatedly seen how an inner critic can stifle or overpower a potentially creative person, project, or idea. It’s painful to witness.

  2. I used to live under the shadow of a very domineering, authoritative inner critic.

  3. I have seen firsthand that it doesn’t have to be this way—there are tools, techniques, and practices to help us reframe how we relate to all parts of ourselves. We can also become more conscious of how and where we ascribe authority. As I shift this relationship within myself, I’ve seen the profound difference it can make in my creative work, in my relationships, and in navigating uncertainty, and I’d love to pass on what I’ve learned in an experiential way.
